App and web development for Mittagong, Picton and the Southern Tablelands
Code Workshop serves businesses across the Southern Highlands and Tablelands — from Mittagong to Picton and beyond. Here's what we do and how we work.
Code Workshop is a software development agency based in Bowral, Southern Highlands, NSW. We build mobile apps and web applications for Australian businesses — and we work with clients across the Southern Highlands and Southern Tablelands, from Mittagong in the north to Picton on the edge of the Macarthur region, and all the way south through Moss Vale, Berrima, Robertson, and beyond.
This post is for businesses in these areas who are thinking about a digital project and want to understand what a local development agency actually does — and whether working with us makes sense.
The geography we cover
The Southern Highlands and Southern Tablelands make up a significant stretch of country between Sydney and the ACT. The business community here is more diverse than many people realise, and the towns that form it each have their own character.
Mittagong sits at the northern gateway to the Highlands — closer to Sydney than Bowral, and home to a mix of manufacturing, trades, and service businesses alongside the retail and hospitality that serves the region.
Moss Vale is the commercial centre of the Highlands proper, with a stronger concentration of professional services, medical practices, and businesses serving the rural sector.
Bowral is where we're based — the tourist heart of the Highlands, with a mix of boutique retail, hospitality, professional services, and the creative economy that flows from being a destination.
Berrima and the villages around it are more rural and tourism-focused, with a high concentration of small hospitality, craft, and artisan businesses.
Robertson and the plateau country to the west are largely agricultural — dairy, cattle, horticulture — with a small-town business community that includes local services and agritourism.
Picton sits at the northern edge of the Southern Tablelands, bridging the Highlands and the greater Sydney area. It has a different economic character — more working town than tourist destination, with a strong trades and light industrial sector.
We know this area. We're in it. And that context matters when we're thinking about what to build and for whom.
What businesses in these areas actually need
The types of digital projects that come up most often in the Highlands and Tablelands reflect the industries that dominate the region.
Tourism and hospitality
Tourism is a major economic driver across the entire region — from accommodation and restaurants in Bowral to experience businesses and cellar doors in the villages. The digital needs of these businesses go beyond a good-looking website.
Booking systems that integrate with existing calendar tools. Gift voucher management. Customer loyalty programs. Integration with platforms like Airbnb or booking.com alongside direct booking capability. Automated guest communication. These are the kinds of tools that actually make a difference to tourism businesses — and they're exactly what we build.
Trades and construction
The Highlands and Tablelands have a significant trades sector: builders, electricians, plumbers, landscapers. These businesses often outgrow the generic job management apps available off the shelf — because their processes, their quoting logic, or their client relationships are specific enough that the generic tools don't fit.
A custom job management system, quoting tool, or client portal built around how a specific trades business actually operates can make a real difference to efficiency and professionalism.
Agriculture and rural businesses
The rural sector around Robertson, the upper plateau, and the Picton area has specific digital needs that mainstream software rarely addresses well. Livestock management, property records, supply chain tracking, agronomic scheduling — these are problems that bespoke software solves better than off-the-shelf tools designed for urban businesses.
We've worked with rural businesses and understand the specific requirements: offline functionality when connectivity is poor, mobile-first interfaces for use in the field, integration with agricultural data platforms.
Professional services
Accountants, lawyers, financial planners, consultants, and other professional services businesses in Moss Vale, Mittagong, and Bowral often need client portals, document management tools, or internal systems that go beyond what generic practice management software provides.
Retail and local products
The Highlands has a strong local products economy — food, craft, art, design. Businesses in this space often have e-commerce needs that require more than a standard Shopify store: subscription boxes, wholesale portals, custom product configurators, integration with local fulfilment.
What we actually build
To be specific about what Code Workshop does:
Mobile apps — iPhone and Android applications, built natively with Swift/Kotlin or using React Native for cross-platform projects. We've built apps used by millions of users.
Web applications — custom tools that run in a browser. Booking systems, customer portals, job management platforms, internal dashboards, SaaS products. Not brochure websites — software.
System integrations — connecting existing systems together. If your business uses several platforms that don't talk to each other, we can often build the bridge.
We're a small team by design. No offshore outsourcing. The developers you talk to are the ones building your product. We prefer clients who want direct communication and a genuine collaborative relationship over those who want to hand off a spec and wait.
The local advantage
Working with a local developer has practical advantages that are easy to underestimate until you've experienced the alternative.
We can meet in person, which tends to produce better outcomes early in a project when the brief is still taking shape. We're available by phone during Australian business hours — no time zone calculations required. We understand the regional context, which means you don't have to explain things that should be obvious.
And our reputation in the Highlands is something we care about directly. We live and work here. The businesses we build for are part of the same community we're part of. That creates a different kind of accountability.
Getting started
If you're a business in Mittagong, Picton, Moss Vale, Bowral, or anywhere else in the Southern Highlands and Tablelands — and you have a digital project in mind — we'd like to hear about it.
The best first step is a conversation. No pitch, no sales process. Just a chance to understand what you're trying to achieve and whether we can help.
